Building Handmade Custom Farmhouse Dining Tables to customer specifications is one of the goals of Just Fine Tables. We believe in our motto, “Tables To Love And Last”, and work to achieve the same with each and every table we build or refinish.

Below are a couple of our handmade custom farmhouse dining tables built to customer specifications. Both are the same size, (42″ x 80″ x 31″), with solid maple tops and aprons all supported on large 5″ Husky Farm Table Legs.

This table and the one below are the same. However, they appear beautifully different as a result of the lighting, the wood’s grain, and the camera angle.

….. You might have noticed that the table height is 31″ rather than the standard 30″. The table legs were extended by one inch and the apron sized to allow the two arm chairs to fit under the table. We do our best to accommodate our customer wishes. (We have made adjustments to other custom customer tables in the past; for example, here is another maple top custom dining table with two matching benches… that was built with some special size needs built into it [Christmas Present]).

///// Find below the other Handmade Farmhouse Dining Table built virtually identical to the one above (i.e. materials and size). It should be noted that the stain applied to the tops of both tables was the same. Yes, the stain applied to the table above and the table here was ‘Ebony’. The differences you see between the tables is a function of the sanding, the method of applying the stain, and how you mix the stain (i.e. think about James Bond’s martini mix requirement, “Shaken vs. Stirred”). Yes, that makes a big difference in the stain’s application as well as the taste of the martini.

REFINISHED / RESTORED / RE-PURPOSED FURNITURE

In addition to building Handmade Farm Tables and Other Furniture Items, Just Fine Tables does Refinish Furniture and/ or Repair-Refine Furniture items. With that in mind, thought it might be useful to review some of our previous Restoring – Re-Purposing works from the past.

Please note that Just Fine Tables did all the staining and painting of the dining set ensemble… but, the upholstering of the chair seats was done by someone else.

“This table is the Only Table that we have ever painted.” Most of our items are stained. However, we believe that you would agree that we did a darn good job with our paint job. We do know that someone else thought so as it sold almost immediately when we displayed it at the Encore Resales store in Pelham, AL.

We found this set while on a trip to Texas. We brought it back to Alabama and restored and refinished it there. We displayed it at Encore Resales and soon it found a home near Montevallo, AL for a lady who had been looking for a set like that for over 2 years. (Sometimes one just gets lucky!)

We have Refinished Round Pedestal Tables many times. We are showing only one here as it is a good representation of the many we have done… and continue to do when we find them. We love to add chairs with our refinished tables as it always makes a better offering to our customers.

On occasion we find a worthwhile piece of furniture like this Broyhill Coffee Table that needs a little TLC. We enjoy refinishing beautiful and useful pieces like this that will match our motto of ..”Tables To Love And Last”. (FYI: Just outside in our shop is a similar Coffee Table table that we will refinish in the near future. You will just have to wait and see what we do with it. But, we are confident that it will meet with your approval upon refinishing.)

VINTAGE “COURTHOUSE” ARM CHAIR:

We found this story teller and restored it to its historic beauty. We displayed it at Encore Resales and also advertised it on Craigslist. (Well, to make a long story short… we got a call from a guy from Austin, TX asking if the chair remained available (found on Craigslist). We said it was still available. The guy said I Want It!, but he said he lived in Austin, TX. He did not know how we could ship it to him and how much it would cost to do so. –SURPRISE–We told him $20 for gas as we were planning on visiting our Son and Family there within a week or two. {Another Good Luck Thing} .. We brought the chair to Austin and sold it to the guy plus $20 gas money.( the guy was an attorney who had been looking for one of those type chairs for his personal home office.))

UNIQUE ‘LINGERIE CHEST’ WITH MIRROR:

We found this unique Lingerie Chest at a Salvation Army store around Memphis during one of our trips to the family farm. It was really cool, but did require some restoration. We did the restoration, painted, and upgraded the chest and … made someone happy soon after we displayed it at Encore Resales.

RE-PURPOSED SEWING MACHINE:

Just Fine Tables found this old sewing machine and thought it would work well as a desk / vanity. We restored it and did our best to make it useful and to look good. (Please note: There is an electric sewing machine still in the table… it did work, but would need a professional sewing machine repair person to make it work correctly.)

We restored this cute Drop Leaf Round Table and displayed it at Encore Resales in Pelham, AL. Someone purchased it, but as typical… we did not know who was the purchaser. ………….Move ahead to present day: We have not met the person who purchased the Drop Leaf Round Table, but we have been contacted in the last 2 weeks by the owner asking if we could provide a base for a table top they are having built. Seriously. Here is a picture of this table in its new home.

ANTIQUE ESTATE FARM TABLE:

Antique Estate Farm Table

This old Antique Farm Table was restored and refinished. The table was unique with its deep apron and the big drawer on one end. We knew that anyone who wanted this table would need to have chairs with no arm rests to fit under the table. Well… a lady from around Huntsville, AL saw this and fell in love with it. Yes,… it is in her home now.

Found this Unique Table / Desk and just had to refinish it. Glad we did as it found a new home soon after we displayed it at Encore Resales.

COUNTRY HUTCH ON OPEN BASE:

Country Hutch on Open Base (20″ x 62″ x 72″ w/ 11″ deep shelves)

This Country Hutch is a Restoration, a Rebuild, a Re-purposing, and a Refinishing piece combined. We have added this to this blog post as it displays many of the things that can be done to provide a useful and attractive piece of furniture. :: The base needed a top (we built a top for the base). We had the top shelf assembly from a discarded piece of furniture. (we added it to the newly rebuilt base.) Then we just did our thing…. and put it all together as you see in the picture. [ Yes!, It Found A New Home!!]

“REAL BARNWOOD” HANDMADE TABLES

The Abundance of Old Barns and Sheds in and around our farm home have supplied us with real barn wood to use in building tables. The items built so far with the barn wood have been of the shorter variety. The useful pieces, or portions of the barn wood have been short in length. As a result, the tables built have consisted of Wine Bar Buffet Tables, a Coffee Table, and a Small Rustic Table.

A RUSTIC “MAN CAVE” COFFEE TABLE:

It should be noted that the Man Cave Coffee Table was constructed with pieces of lumber from three (3) separate barns. The top is from one, the legs are from another one, and the 13″ wide bottom shelf is from a separate 3rd barn. (FYI: At a future date, we expect to obtain some more of the wide plank lumber from the 3rd barn source for a 6-8 person Farm Table.)

And with the coffee table, we built this Rustic Barn Wood Table with the remainder of the barn wood we had. As you can see, the top of the table and the coffee table are very similar. Please know… that we anticipate building more of these type tables in the future. ….(FYI 2: We know where there is a boat load (seriously… in a boat) of this barn wood just waiting for us to create something unique in the very near future.)

And then, ….we get requests from folks who want us to build a ‘Family Keepsake’ from some barn wood from their family farms. For example, below is a picture of a large Barn Door that a family friend wants us to use to build a number of table items for them.

Handmade and Refinished Furniture

A Little History Lesson…

As Many Folks Know, Just Fine Tables has become known for its Handmade and Refinished Furniture Items. We started over 12 years ago with a few of those wonderful “Honey Do’s” when we lived on Lay Lake in Alabama. We were in need of a different dining table for our new home and my wife had started to look into restoring some old antique and used furniture items to sell at a nearby consignment store.

We built our first farm table for our dining area and used it for a few years. It was completely built from scratch with some nice pine planks and some deck posts for legs.

Our early-on refinishing adventure was and still is our biggest refinishing (and rebuild) job. It was a large antique mahogany buffet / sideboard that we purchased at an auction. As I recall we purchased it for about $25o and I know we sold it for $750 at that consignment store. [Humm… there just might be some $’s to be made in this kind of activity???]

Shortly thereafter, our Lay Lake next door neighbor decided on a bold and very gutsy move to open a consignment and thrift store in Pelham, AL. I say gutsy, as it was during the time when the economy was the worst in recent history. …Our neighbor asked if we would build some tables* and provide other consignment items for their new store. (OK, you guessed it. …Our first handmade farm table put into the neighbor’s new store was our dining room table.)

Since those humble beginnings, our neighbor’s business has grown and so has ours. Our neighbors have expanded their original store and have opened two others (one in Florida).

RUSTIC ALL WOOD FARMHOUSE FARM TABLE

Just Fine Tables’ most recent Farm Table is a Rustic All Wood Farmhouse Farm Table. It could also be described as a Harvest Farm Table because of its size and looks. Either description reflects a table that will provide a family, …both beauty and functionality for years to come.

The Farm Table Top was built from seven (7) planks that had been aged-distressed, stained, and finished for beauty and long life. The finish is a satin finish that provides both water resistance and UV light resistance. The Base of the table (i.e. the Legs and Apron) is all wood from a old table that was built in Italy for “Pottery Barn” in years past. And as you can see, the legs and apron have been painted cottage white and distressed. They have also been finished with a similar satin finish as the table top.

AND… because of the finish and the wood used on the table top, one could use the table outside… say, on your covered porch.

RUSTIC RECLAIMED WOOD BUFFET BAR CONSOLE TABLE

Just a few days ago we took time to build a new Outdoor – Indoor Buffet Bar Console Table Island from some old lumber we reclaimed on a recent trip to Austin, TX.

The idea for building such a table was prompted by my partner, J’s-AVE, when she said that she had seen / or saw a discussion regarding our first Buffet Bar Table (built over three years ago) on someone else’s website (i.e. LindaBerner.com). My partner had also mentioned that pictures of the original Outdoor-Indoor Buffet Bar Table Island had also been posted on “Pinterest” by someone …way back when.

And, with all the emphasis, …yours truly recalled that I had received a phone call from a lady in Maggie Valley, NC who said that she was the person who purchased the original buffet bar table / console at Encore Resales. She had done so while visiting relatives in the greater Birmingham, AL area. [“The lady asked if we had another one of the buffet bar table islands, as a friend of hers near her home asked if she could obtain one for their home. (duhh.. didn’t have one)].

“INTERNATIONAL” RUSTIC FARMHOUSE FARM TABLE

Just Fine Tables Has Gone International. Yes, we have successfully had one of our Rustic Top Farm Tables make it’s way to Japan. A nice Navy lady who was moving to Japan wanted one and she knew she could not get one there.

The lady also purchased the two simple ‘black chairs’ to go with the table. The cool ‘tractor seat chairs’ were already sold and were still displayed with the farm table as they had not been picked up by their new owner.

Just Fine Tables and our partner, J’s-Ave have been very busy attempting to keep our display and sales booths’ in Pelham, AL and Covington, TN (Encore Resales and Upscale Resale, respectively) filled. It has been tough. For the record, here are some of the additional items that have found new owners, locally.

HANDMADE “SAWHORSE” TABLE DESK

It had been at least three years since we built our last “Sawhorse Table Desk” and when we found some sawhorse patterns, we thought it was about time to build one. Having looked at sawhorse desks online and having seen some with shelves, we made ours combining our old style with shelves. Here is what we built.

The Sawhorse Table Desk shown above was displayed in our booth at ENCORE RESALES, Pelham, AL. We had expected it to show for a couple of weeks there with the expectation that it would sell before the end of July. Well, we were off a little on the timing. It showed at Encore for about a week and someone decided it should be relocated to their home (yes, it sold). [ Now, Just Fine Tables is jumping through hoops to build something to fill the void that is in our booth. So… we are going to build a simple Rustic Farm Table as a replacement. NOTE: Just Fine Tables expects to have the new table to Encore Resales sometime the week of July 25. ]

Just as we had sold our Sawhorse Table Desk quickly, a similar thing happened for my life’s partner, J’s-AVE, at our other consignment store, UPSCALE RESALE, Covington, TN. In J’s case, she had diligently been working on a Kidney Shaped Desk that we found about two months before… (yes, sometimes it takes a while to complete projects to our liking). [A little history: J’s-Ave had previously had a six-drawer vanity desk at Upscale that she thought would sell semi-quickly. Well, it took over two months before it found a new home.]
You guessed it… the new KIDNEY SHAPED DESK sold in less than one week at Upscale Resale in our booth there.

As mentioned, it took about two months before the desk was ready for display for sales. So… what did the desk look like two months before? Here is a picture of it beforehand.

As you can see, there is a lot of difference in these pictures. The Beforehand Picture shows the desk with two empty drawer slots (OK, one shows the bottom of one box that Just Fine Tables built to fill the gaping holes.) and the old look. We also had to improve the existing drawers to fit correctly as part of the upgrade. Hope you like the changes we made in the desk.

Since the Kidney Shaped Desk sold so quickly, J’s-AVE and Just Fine Tables joined forces together to fill the void in our booth at Upscale Resale. Our combined efforts led to the building of a small indoor / outdoor bench from a twin sized Jenny Lind headboard and building a bench seat. Here is the bench that we replaced the Kidney Shaped Desk with in our Upscale Resale booth.

STYLISH HANDMADE FARMHOUSE FARM TABLE

And now, … for the rest of the story.

Since relocating from Alabama to our Tennessee Farm Home, Just Fine Tables has had the opportunity to be contacted by local Tennessee folks to learn if we could possibly build them a specialty farm table for their homes. The first was last November when a lady found us on our website and saw a square farmhouse farm table with two benches we had made for a family who lives a few miles north of Montgomery, AL (i.e. CUSTOM SQUARE FARMHOUSE FARM TABLE W/ MATCHING BENCHES).

However, this new Tennessee prospective customer wanted a larger square table for their new home and is shown here (December 2015). Later, the new customer asked to have a single matching bench built to go with the farm table and its new surrounding chairs. This was March of this year when we completed the bench. ( Note: Just Fine Tables now has a request to build the family a matching wine bar buffet table. Love those repeat customers!)

And now … info regarding the opening picture … Just Fine Tables has had the opportunity to build a truly specialized farmhouse farm table for a family in Dyersburg, TN. The lady of the house found our website by surfing the web and saw some of the tables shown in the links above. She sent me an email and asked if I could build her a large farm table to be 42″ wide and 90″ long and to use classic big 5″ farm table legs. Realizing that this lady wanted something very special, I replied to her email and asked that she call to discuss. She did and followed our discussion with an email including some pictures and links of what she wanted to match, or that she thought would blend well with her other furniture and new dining area. … Just Fine Tables took her request and after a couple of days was able to give her a price for her new table should she desire that we build it for her. Well… obviously, we did.

Since the customer of this latest Farmhouse Farm Table had a number of requests, I thought it might be beneficial for you to have a feel for what is involved with custom built tables should you or someone you know want a custom built handmade table.

The list of wants for the above specialty farmhouse farm table were: 1. As mentioned, the size needed to be 42″ x 90″ and that the legs needed to be classic 5″ turned farm table legs. 2. That the table needed to be a hardwood and the finish so that the children of the house could not destroy the table immediately (we build them so that in the worse case, they can be stripped and redone to last a lifetime + ). 3. Her husband wanted the table to have thick top to be both strong and look appropriate for their large house. 4. She wanted the top to look similar in appearance to the top of this coffee table-

and 5. She wanted the table legs to be distressed to semi-match some expensive Hooker chairs she wanted to use.

In order to accomplish the customer’s desires…. we did the following:

Bought 1.5″ thick rough cut maple lumber and after cutting to near lengths (always a little longer), spent a day planing the lumber down for a smooth top.
Bought 5″ husky farm table legs in maple from Osborne Wood Products Co.
Did a lot of color match tests..

4. After staining and painting the table legs .. hangar bolts had to be installed (this is tough to get right) so the legs fit well with the leg attachment braces inside the table.

And then …after a lot of sanding, staining, final finishing a couple or three times and delivery of the table to the customer… you have a happy customer.

p.s. Yes, this is a very heavy table. Luckily, we have some strong young men in the neighborhood who likes to make a little extra spending money.

In addition to building Fine Handmade Farm / Farmhouse Tables, Just Fine Tables also builds Handmade Rustic and/or Custom Wine Bar Buffet Tables. These Wine Bar Buffet Tables have always been a hit with our customers. SQUARE FARMHOUSE TABLE & MATCHING BENCH

Just Fine Tables has succeeded in hand building a matching bench to go with the large square farmhouse table that we built back in December for a couple moving into their new home. The lady of the house found Just Fine Tables while searching the internet for farm / farmhouse tables. She found our website and was in awe as she realized that we were located within 15-20 miles of their new home and that we built the kind of dining tables she wanted.
At first, the couple only wanted a husky table as they were in the process of decorating their new home. And, at that time they weren’t interested in a bench as they had decided on the chairs for the table (i.e. light blue fabric covered chairs). However, when we delivered the table they had reconsidered on having a handmade matching bench for one side of the table. (re: Family kids dining and potential spills, etc.). The couple ordered the matching bench, and luckily, we had just enough ash lumber to build the bench.

When we were in initial discussions about building the table, we had on hand most of the ash lumber needed, but did not have any large table legs. We told the customer that we would have to order legs from our supplier as we did not have any 5″ husky farm table legs. Just as we were setting up to order the table legs, we found four(4) unfinished table legs at our local Consignment Store (UPSCALE RESALE, Covington, TN). We noted that the price of the unfinished legs were essentially the same as those we would have gotten at our normal supplier and that they were of acceptable quality. So… we bought the legs, did our thing in building the table and the table became history.

For the matching bench, we had to purchase legs and did so from our regular supplier, OSBORNE WOOD PRODUCTS, INC., Toccoa, GA which was great as their service and quality are first rate. The legs we found on their site that most closely matched the table legs were their ‘3″ Country Bench Legs’ (see above). We did our normal staining, painting, distressing, and final finishing of the bench legs the same as we had previously done with the table legs for the matching look. As you can see, the bench top is a match also.

Please know that this farm farmhouse table and matching bench is the first of Just Fine Tables’ custom tables built in our new location in Covington, TN. COUNTRY FARMHOUSE FARM TABLE & CHAIRS

Just Fine Tables recently Refinished and Up-styled a All-Wood Round Pedestal Table to become a true Country Farmhouse Round Farm Table. Additionally, we did the same with four solid wood chairs to match and add to the Farmhouse Round Table for a complete Country Kitchen Ensemble.

As noted in the caption, the Farm Table is 42″ in diameter making it ideal for most country kitchens. Also, based upon the picture, we took and highlighted the top with a darker stain and then applied a pleasant satin polyurethane finish.
For the chairs, after ensuring they were structurally stable, we lightly sanded and painted all the chairs a cottage white as we had done with the base and apron of the table. For the final finishing of the chairs, we re-sanded with fine grit sandpaper for a smooth feel while lightly distressing to show typical chair wear and then applied a satin polyurethane final finish for long life.

WINE BAR BUFFET TABLE in RUSTIC BARN WOOD

Just Fine Tables built a Rustic Wine Bar Buffet Table from some Real Old Barn Wood filled with bug and nail holes and lots of natural weathered aging. Since this barn wood had already served its original purpose for over 60 years, Just Fine Tables decided the wood would work well for a few more decades as a rustic wine bar buffet table / console table similar to others we have built.

The Wine Bar Buffet Console Table in Rustic Barn Wood is conveniently sized with dimensions of 47.5″ wide x 18.75″ deep x 36″ counter height. The top is composed of three planks that have been sanded nearly smooth, stained, and finished with high grade polyurethane for long life…even for outdoor use on say, a porch.

Additionally, you can see the wine bar is completed with two (2) shelves. One shelf is built as a full plank for general storage and the lower shelf is built with six (6) wine bottle storage slots and a shorter general storage shelf. All surfaces were sanded, stained, and finished as above.

This hand built rustic wine bar buffet table above is the first for 2016, but will certainly not be the last. Legs have already been cut for two more. The top of one has already been selected to be built from aged ash lumber remnants remaining after the building of this large square farm table and the soon to be built matching bench.

Other recent projects have included the refinishing and up-styling of a round oak pedestal table, five all wood chairs, and a mirror or two for our partner, J’s-AVE. Don’t fret… you should see some of these in our next blog post in a few days.

HANDMADE FARM TABLES for CHRISTMAS

We did it again. A Custom Handmade Farm Table for a family’s new home for Christmas. This year (2015), the table was built and delivered into a brand new home. Last year’s (2014) farm table was built and delivered into a beautiful existing home that the family had recently purchased. And, in one sense, Just Fine Tables sold a very special table back in (2013) at Christmas time through Encore Resales that could be considered a Christmas table.

This year’s Christmas Farm Table… A 60″ SQUARE ASH TOP FARM TABLE:

This table was only the 2nd square farm table built by Just Fine Tables. This one is highlighted with an aged and distressed ash wood top mounted on large 5″ farmhouse table legs. Please note, that the customer will be adding fabric covered chairs to complete most of the ensemble. The remainder of the table set will be a custom matching bench (the customer realized that some of their friends and relatives have children and… if they spill something, it would be better to do so on a bench.

This Christmas Farm Table was unique in that it was built slightly taller than standard table height with the apron skirt inside the legs more than typical and the benches were slightly shorter than typical. These modifications were because the “man of the house” liked to cross his legs while dining and did not want to be rubbing up on the table. (Just Fine Tables does our best to work with our customers to get what they want.)

The 2013 Christmas Farm Table was not one requested by a specific customer. Instead, the table was one built by Just Fine Tables because we wanted to create something special with some hickory wood we found earlier that year. We also had a beautiful trestle table base in storage we wanted to use if we could find a suitable top. So… we matched the hickory wood with the trestle base and we built this.

As mentioned earlier, this hickory top trestle table was not one built custom for a family at Christmas. Instead, it was purchased just before Christmas from our Vendor Booth at Encore Resales. It was obviously a Christmas Table as you will note the Christmas tree sitting on the table.

Custom Handmade RUSTIC OBLONG DINING TABLE

A very patient customer from March this year had contacted Just Fine Tables about a special sized dining table and a semi-matching kitchen island console. Finally, after our relocation to Tennessee, Just Fine Tables completed and delivered the table and kitchen console to the family for their Thanksgiving this year and years to come.

HANDMADE RUSTIC OBLONG DINING TABLE ON CUSTOM METAL BASE:

The top is 100% ash that has been chemically and environmentally aged, distressed, stained, and final finished with water resistant / UV light resistant polyurethane. The base was custom built per the customer’s requirements* with some personal engineering ingenuity between Just Fine Tables and the contracted local Covington, TN welder. The base was then cleaned, primed, painted, repainted, and coated with the same kind of polyurethane as the table. (Note: The base can be removed from the table top. The mounting design is essentially the same as one Just Fine Tables found on an Ethan Allen table that we restored a couple of years ago.)
* Customer requirements: Plenty of leg room, no table legs on corners, easy to swing legs around underneath without bumping table, and definitely strong and rigid.

IF one looks at the upper left hand side of the table picture one should see an empty kitchen console sitting in front of the kitchen window. …. This kitchen console was also custom built to the customer’s specifications (or as nearly as we could do it).

HANDMADE RUSTIC KITCHEN CONSOLE ISLAND:

The Kitchen Island Console’s top and shelves were built from cutoff pieces of the table top ash and prepared and finished similarly. (Note: One should note that the console’s top and the table top’s center piece are the same wide piece of lumber.)

One should note that the kitchen island console is similar to many of the wine bar buffet table consoles built by Just Fine Tables. The major differences in this custom piece are that it is on casters so that it can be easily rolled from place to place and that there are no wine bottle slots in the shelves. The customer plans on using the shelves for cook books, etc., in addition to typical kitchen island uses.

FYI: Prior to finishing the above dining table and island, Just Fine Tables has received our first order of a custom table locally here in Tennessee. It will be built and delivered to our new customer for Christmas. The customer found us online at https://JustFineTables.com while searching the web. The customer was extremely surprised to learn that we currently live only about 20 miles from the customer’s new home. Anyway, the table desired will be a 60″ Square table similar to this one the customer found on our website.

RUSTIC HANDMADE WINE BAR BUFFET TABLE CONSOLE

As mentioned in the previous post, Just Fine Tables built a Rustic Wine Bar Buffet Table Console with a top that matched the X-Metal Based Farm Tables’ top. The rustic top was built from the last remnants of ash lumber we had available. The ash planks on the rustic wine bar buffet console table were aged and weathered for almost three years for that old weathered barn wood type look. We hope you like it.

As you can see, the wine bar buffet table console built with a rustic ash top is complete with a lower shelf for storage and display with six (6) wine bottle slots. Ideally, this wine bar buffet will make a fine addition in someone’s home for years to come (perhaps it will become a family heirloom; as this table and bench set built over a year ago will become).
