Handmade-Custom Built Farm / Farmhouse Tables and More

We at JustFineTables.com have been extremely busy since our last post (i.e.  Aged Maple Farm Table Sept. 15, 2014) as we have been doing our best to fulfill direct customer orders while keeping our sales booth at Encore Resales stocked.  Of  course, customer orders take preference as they have a financial interest from the onset of construction, … and Just Fine Tables definitely wants to ensure customer acceptance upon completion to add to our list of very satisfied customers.

Our satisfied customers, as referenced in a previous post (i.e. “Custom Kitchen Farmhouse Table”) were responsible for the above Sept 15 order above and two additional orders of that style table… one before Christmas and one at the beginning of the new year.  The major differences in these two orders are the size of the respective table and/or the addition of one or two matching benches.

Also, you should know that we have folks who view our offerings at Encore Resales and while they like what they see, they sometimes want something a little larger or smaller for their needs.  A perfect example of this is shown below in another custom built farm table.

A New HANDMADE “AGED MAPLE” TOP FARM HOUSE DINING TABLE

Re (from previous post): Barn Wood Farm Tables:  As mentioned in our previous post we eluded to the idea of building farm tables with old barn wood**. Well, what we did not get to mention was that we were well on our way to doing so for a couple of great customers living now in Houston, TX. Below you will see the happy couple enjoying their first meal on their new Handmade “Aged* Maple” Barn Wood** Farm House Dining Table.

The Farm House Table is one of the first major pieces of furniture in this couple’s new residence.
The table is 78 inches (6’6″) in length to easily seat up to eight (8) in comfort. We know the couple will enjoy the table for years to come.

*;  **:  “Aged” Maple / Barn Wood should actually be labeled ‘Chemically Aged’ Maple to look and feel like old barn wood.  Please know that Just Fine Tables has been experimenting with different ways to create the look and feel of old barn wood without incurring the time and expense of finding or purchasing real old barn wood direct.  And as of today, we have learned a couple of ways to Chemically Treat*** various types of wood (primarily: Pine; Oak; and Maple) to give the Old Weathered Look.

***: ‘Chemically Treat’:  Please know that Just Fine Tables uses typical Household Chemicals to create the Old Weathered Look.  Most of the chemicals are both safe and even consumable.  Yes, you find many of them in your foods.

FYI: Just Fine Tables attempts to be Environmentally GREEN in every table or refinished furniture item we build or redo.  Granted, we do use some paints and finishes that are not as environmentally friendly as our aging chemicals mentioned above; however, we only use as much of these kinds of products as absolutely necessary to provide the beauty and benefits required of our customers; and our requirements of excellence.

Handmade Kitchen Island and “Barnwood” Farm Tables

Our First Handmade Kitchen Island for 2014 was completed a few days ago.  Yes, Just Fine Tables finally built a Kitchen Island this year.  We had planned to build one earlier (suggested in a post 3-4 months ago), but a number of custom farm table orders have taken our time and as a this is a business, direct orders take priority over spec items.  However, here it is!

NOTE:  Just Fine Tables just updated to WordPress 4.0 and as a result we are having some difficulties with media files and links.  As 4.0 is supposedly a better blog platform, it is not for us until we do some testing (i.e. kick it around, make some mistakes, find out how this really works… you know the drill) before we do a lot of updating of our blog / website.

PLEASE KNOW that we had planned to show you some of our ‘Barnwood’ items made with new wood turned into Old Barnwood (seriously), but with time not on our side and with this new WordPress 4.0 to learn, we’ll hold off for a few days.  In the meantime, enjoy the 1st 2014 Kitchen Island shown above.

CUSTOM KITCHEN FARMHOUSE TABLE

The Custom Kitchen Farmhouse Table we have been building since our Wisconsin trip is complete and is now sitting in its family home.

Farm Table Construction: The Custom Kitchen Farmhouse Family Eating and Gathering Table was built with a solid maple top that was aged and lightly distressed to meet the customer’s desires.  The table apron was constructed with a combination of maple and oak with an accented painted lower edge of pine moulding.  The legs used were Portsmouth Farm Table legs from Osborne Wood Products in knotty pine.

In addition to completing the Farmhouse Table, we were successful in assisting our partner, J’s-AVE, in a few restorations / up-styling adventures.   These include a door from Wisconsin that we re-purposed as a chalkboard.  Yes, the door is now a double-sided chalkboard.

…. and an Up-Styled ‘High End’ Parquet Top Coffee Table having two large drawers with a newly stained and finished top.  The base was painted in ‘country cream’ and lightly distressed accenting the original styling of the coffee table (SCHNADIG; Distinctive Tables By Designs)

For Reference: The Stylish Two-Drawer Parquet Top Coffee Table’s dimensions are approximately 30″ x 44″ x 20″.   It is currently available at Encore Resales.

and we rebuilt a dilapidated three drawer chest to be useful again.   The restoration included a new back and internal structural enhancements.  We also painted it a light gray to complete the restoration.

Must go for now.  We have only about 2 weeks to build a small country table and a kitchen island for our Encore Resales Booth… and a custom farm table, similar to the one highlighted above, for our daughter and husband in their new home in Houston, TX.

ANTIQUE ESTATE FARM TABLE with HAND-CRAFTED COUNTRY HUTCH

An Antique Estate Farm Table and a Hand-Crafted Country Hutch have been combined for someone to enjoy in their country home.  The antique estate kitchen table is rectangular (41 inches wide and 55 inches long) with large drawers on the ends.  The country hutch is a two piece unit and is over five feet wide and six feet tall with deep shelves.

The antique table and the country hutch are currently on display in Booth 47 – 469 at Encore Resales for others to see and want to enjoy as we have. [FYI- Just Fine Tables has been enjoying the table (being used as both a table and as a  kitchen island) and the hutch in our home for the past several months.]

Just Fine Tables and J’s-AVE are currently ‘junkin’ in Milwaukee, WI following the delivery of the small oak trestle table here (i.e. the one we mentioned in the last blog post that had been on our drawing board for the past two years).  Below is the Handmade Custom Oak Trestle Kitchen Table as it sits in the customer’s home in Milwaukee.

Just Fine Tables finished the Two (2) Matching Benches to go with the Custom Square Farm House Table we built earlier for a new customer.  Here they are with the table and chairs in the customer’s home.

As you can see, these pictures show the table, benches, and chairs in the customer’s home where they will be used for many enjoyable meals and fun-filled family gatherings.

To have the benches match the table, we were successful in building the bench tops from the ends of two of the widest table top planks that remained from the table construction.  The legs used on the benches were obtained from one of our vendors, Osborne Wood Products Co., to match the big table legs which were also obtained from Osborne for the table.   The solid oak chairs were obtained by the customer from the American Oak Co.

This is one of our first big Farm House Tables with a Matching Bench. It is shown sitting in the customer’s home.

 

 

 

 

This table and bench were hand built from scratch (i.e. just raw materials).  It is shown as it was displayed at Encore Resales.  Please know that the ensemble found a home shortly after this picture was taken.

 

 

 

This table and farm table with matching bench was a replacement for a table that had been destroyed by fire.  The bench was added per customer request to provide seating for their grandchildren when they would visit Grandpa and Grandma.

 

 

 

And a Trestle Table Farm Table with Matching Trestle Bench built entirely from scratch to match a customer’s photo of a similar table.  The table and bench are shown here sitting in the customer’s home.  (This customer decided to get the table 1st and then get chairs to match.)

 

 

Got to go.  Must complete a coffee table to go to Encore Resales and … especially a small Solid Oak Trestle Table for a friend in Milwaukee, WI.  The small oak trestle table has been on the drawing boards for over two (2) years now.  Sometimes perfection takes a while.

Refinished Furniture ( Pedestal Table & Armoire Chest )

 In addition to Hand Building Custom Farm / Farmhouse Tables, Just Fine Tables Refinishes and Up-Styles Furniture Pieces needing a little TLC (i.e. Tender Loving Care) to make them more enjoyable.  To that end, we recently found an attractive Oval Pedestal Table and a Small Armoire Chest needing some updating attention.

The Oval Pedestal Table was one of those from SE Asia (i.e. Malaysia, China, Vietnam) with the simple and typical ‘natural color’ finish. When we found the pedestal table it was obvious that the table’s former owner had decided that the ‘natural finish’ wasn’t personal enough for their tastes. They had added paint spots, chewing gum, a couple of spider webs, and some storage moldy crap to “enhance” the table’s finish.

#### As we were not overly crazy about the former owner ‘enhancing additions’; …we sterilized the table, stripped the top, and sanded the table from top to bottom. We then applied our magic distressing technique to the top, stained it, and applied two coats of polyurethane as the final finish. For the apron and base, we primed, painted, and lightly distressed them for today’s look. … and VOILA’!

Hope you like our modifications.  NOTE: The table is currently displayed in Booth 47 / 469 at ENCORE RESALES until it finds a new owner who appreciates dining on a solid wood pedestal table that will last for many fine family meals.

And like the Oval Pedestal Table, Just Fine Tables Refinished and Updated a Small ARMOIRE / CHEST we found at a thrift store.  The Armoire Chest was solid wood and was in fair condition with some exceptions.

The exceptions were… that someone had apparently spilled a very dark staining substance on one corner of the chest, there wasn’t a clothes hanging bar in the closet part, and the base ‘feet’ had obviously been sitting in some water as there was some significant water staining and bulging of the wood there. (p.s. All five drawers of the chest were in near perfect condition with no paint, lipstick, gum, perfume, or other contaminant found, except for some expected dust and a paper clip or two.) (p.s.s. In other chests, we have found such things as … live 22 caliber bullets [twice], many photos, an old Errol Flynn movie brochure [Yeah!], a full set of Elk Horn knives [Yeah!], etc. also)

#### To rectify these issues, we cleaned everything from top to bottom, applied a stain blocker to the stained area, sanded everything as needed, built a clothes hangar bar, repaired the water damaged area of the base, and then primed and painted the armoire chest to a lightly distressed medium gray… hoping that this would enhance the interest in the chest by either a man or a woman. …. and VOILA! again

The Armoire Chest as shown was displayed in Booth 47 / 469 at ENCORE RESALES. It has found a new owner who felt the chest would be perfect for their small apartment.

Got to go. Must apply the polyurethane finish to the Two (2) Matching Benches to the Farm Table shown in our previous post (i.e. the 54″ Square Farmhouse Table) …and must get started building a Hutch Base and a Kitchen Island.

The 54″ Square Farm House Table is complete and is now sitting in its home.

The large square table top is constructed of wide oak planks and the table apron is oak plank also.  The legs are large 5″ Husky Farm Table legs from Osborne Wood Products Co.

The customer added four (4) solid oak chairs to match with the table from American Oak, Montgomery, AL.   The four chairs will be balanced soon with two (2) custom matched benches* to complete the ensemble.

*    The benches will be constructed from the cut off ends of two of the widest planks used in the table top.  This will make the benches exact matches to the table top.  The benches will be 100% oak with the bench legs purchased new from Osborne Wood Products Co.

( NOTE: The benches are built and are awaiting their final finishes. They will be complete by the end of the 4th of July Weekend! )

Custom TRESTLE DINING FARM TABLE and BENCH

This Custom Trestle Farm Table and Bench was on the drawing boards before our trip out west.  Having returned, we immediately took our drawings and built the following:

The customer was very specific about the size of the table (36″ x 59″) and the sturdiness of both the table and bench.  All indications are that we accomplished the customer’s goals for the table and bench.

(Note 1: The customer had taken pictures of a similar table that a friend had built in their garage and asked us to duplicate that table as best as possible modified only for the size and strength requirements and the added bench  || Note 2:  We, at Just Fine Tables, love pictures of tables that our customers like and want.  Pictures help tremendously in allowing us to do our best for our customers.)

While on our trip out West, my partner and I were successful in securing some spending money with some items we picked up along the way. For example, we found these two chairs that we Up-Styled on our return that found new homes almost immediately.

These Were Fun to Up-Style!

 

 

And, we found this clean and simple End / Side Table on our trip.  We spruced it up by stripping the top and staining and distressing it.  The base and legs were painted black and lightly accent distressed.

OUTDOOR COCKTAIL / COFFEE TABLE and “J’s- Antiques, Vintage, Etc”

Outdoor furniture, such as the Outdoor Cocktail – Coffee Table shown below, seems appropriate to feature this time of year. Especially, since the spring season is upon us with the desire to get outdoors with our families and friends.

You should note that this Outdoor Cocktail Table is large and almost square. It is constructed with a treated wood distressed top that it is attached to a metal base with a metal grid shelf underneath. Also, the table legs are adjustable with screw-in plastic pads which should be comforting if you are concerned about scratching one’s floor. And, as you can see in the picture, the table looks and works well indoors also.
While we have highlighted outdoor furniture; having some restful and useful indoor furniture might also be on one’s mind (for example: your hideaway cottage or beach house). With that thought in mind, my partner, J’s-AVE, has put the finishing touches on these items.

Farm Tables and More Farmhouse Tables

It’s been hectic with all the farm or farmhouse tables we have been working on recently at Just Fine Tables.  Hectic; yes, because of the limited time we have had available while working on a number of other furniture activities and projects for our partner, J’s-AVE.

For example: Do you remember this table from an earlier blog post:

Yes, it sold, …however,  the new owner really wanted the legs and apron to be painted black and lightly distressed; …therefore we made the customer happy:

… and then, another customer wanted a Copy of the Rough Ash Top Farm Table, …. but, wanted it in a neutral / unfinished state for them to finish as they wanted. Just Fine Tables luckily had just enough Ash lumber and old table legs to fill this new customer’s desire. Here it is sitting in the customer’s home as delivered:

…. and then we had the lady who wanted a smaller farmhouse table with distressed colored legs with a table top stained similar to her wood floor. We, at Just Fine Tables accommodated the lady after several emails…..

Note: We told the lady that if she didn’t like the table at the price offered (special prototype price), we would be happy to sell it at Encore Resales for a much higher price.  Obviously, she took the table as you can see above.

However, Just Fine Tables began immediately to build a similar table that we did display for sale to the greater Birmingham, AL furniture market at Encore Resales.  Here is the similar table as it sat in Display Booth 47 / 469 before it sold.

EXECUTIVE DESK .. or .. DINING TABLE

Just Fine Tables just completed the Large Executive Desk / Great Dining Table that was mentioned in our previous post.  It is now displayed at Encore Resales Furniture and Consignment Store.

The Desk / Table is one that has been both Restored-Refinished and Up-styled for today’s furniture lovers.

In addition to the table above, Just Fine Tables finished today a new style custom farm table that a new customer had requested us to build.   We have it shown below (in our shop) as a sneak preview of some new farmhouse tables that we will be offering to the general public in the near future.  Hope you like it.

The Farmhouse Table was built earlier this year, but took a detour before getting to Encore Resales.  (It was used as a temporary replacement table for a lady who had Just Fine Tables rebuild her pedestal table base to safely and satisfactorily support a 170 lb. granite top**( see below)).   The Farmhouse Harvest Table is now at Encore Resales with a couple of matching chairs to become a convenient dining / breakfast table and chair set.

Refinished Fire Station ‘Ethan Allen’ Kitchen Table

It is done!  …. that’s, the Fire Station Kitchen Table

The Fire Station Kitchen Table mentioned in the previous post has been completed and put back in service for this Fire House’s Fire Fighters and EMT’s.  It was a challenge, but one well worth it, as it is not everyday that someone can do something special for folks who put their lives on the line to save lives and/or peoples’ property.

     Please note that this table is over 35 years old.  It had been refinished sometime in the past and also had the two end leaves permanently bolted in place to make the table 100 inches in overall length.  The chairs were recently purchased new to closely match the kitchen’s cabinetry … and that was a goal for the refinishing of the table (i.e. to closely match the cabinetry and the new chairs).

As you can see in the picture, the table was much lighter in color (more so if seen up close).  It was, however, in fairly good shape for it’s age and the picture shows it, …but upon close examination, there were definite signs of age and use.
In addition to refinishing the table to match the new chairs and cabinetry, the Fire Chief wanted the Fire Station’s emblem to be laminated into the center of the table top for posterity.  You can see it in the top picture, but obviously, you cannot read it.  So….

Refinishing this table was a challenge, but one that Just Fine Tables will never forget.  We should all be thankful for our Fire Fighters / EMT’s and Police Officers each and everyday.

DISTRESSED ‘SOLID OAK’ ROUND TABLE w/ LEAF & SIX(6) MATCHING CHAIRS

     It’s True, …Just Fine Tables recently Completed the Up-Styling and Refinishing of a Solid Oak Round Pedestal Table and added Six (6) Matching Chairs for a complete dining set.

The table is solid oak ( no veneer ) that has the top & leaf stained and distressed and has the base and apron painted and distressed in cottage white.  The table is 48″ in diameter, and with it’s 18″ leaf inserted, it becomes a 48″ x 66″ oval table that easily seats six folks.
To accommodate six folks comfortably, Just Fine Tables added six(6) solid wood chairs and painted and distressed them to match the table base and apron.  With the chairs added to the table, one has a complete dining ensemble that can be enjoyed for years to come.    
We at Just Fine Tables needed to complete the above table and chair set because we had a custom refinishing job to start work on.  The custom refinishing job is being done on a local Fire Station’s Vintage ‘Ethan Allen’ Dining Table that they have had for over 35 years (lots and lots of memories).  The fire station chief thought with the table’s history, it would be worthwhile updating and keeping the table, rather than obtaining a new table.  This was especially true, since the fire station recently purchased new chairs to match the storage cabinetry found in the fire station.

Just for you, below is a picture of the Fire Station Table in the process of being refinished.  You can note that the base is complete (had to do 1st), and now we complete the top.

Got to go now and complete the Fire Station table base… and also start the needed upgrading of a lady’s table base to safely hold and display a 49″ solid granite table top to match her updated and redone kitchen.

HANDMADE “Rough Cut” ASH TOP FARMHOUSE FARM TABLE

WE’RE BACK! … and here is our First Full-Fledged Farm Table for 2014.

HANDMADE ‘Rough Cut’ FARMHOUSE FARM TABLE with AGED ‘ASH’ TOP (has been SOLD):

     The RUSTIC ROUGH CUT ASH TOP FARM TABLE is 36″ x 60″ allowing it to Seat Six (6) Easily in Elegant Farmhouse Style.  The table top has a proprietary stain applied and the table legs and apron are painted cottage white and distressed.
All woods used in the construction of this farm table have been aged outside in the elements in excess of six months (more like 8 months).

     The final polyurethane satin finish applied to the table is one used for both indoor and ‘outdoor’ applications.  This means that you can feel comfortable using this farmhouse table on porch should you want to take your farmhouse dining outside.

The RUSTIC FARMHOUSE FARM TABLE is currently available at ENCORE RESALES.

NOTE: Before Just Fine Tables completed the farm table above, please know that we were feverishly updating our Consignment Booth #47 – 469 at Encore Resales with other furniture or vintage / keepsake items.  Some were newly built, some were refinished for current use, and at least one was a re-purposed item that one can enjoy while remembering the past.

KITCHEN ISLAND – BAR w/ LIGHTLY DISTRESSED BASE

AS PROMISED, we were successful in Delivering the Kitchen Island – Bar to Encore Resales TODAY.

The Kitchen Island – Bar in Booth 47 / 469 at Encore Resales:

The Kitchen Island – Bar with it’s Lightly Distressed Base comes with Four (4) Drawers and Storage Below.  And, … as you can see, the Island – Bar has a Solid Stained Wood Top and Shelves.  The dimensions of the Island are 34″ wide x 60″ long x 36″ height offering lots of comfort while eating, working, or entertaining.

(p.s. I must express my thanks to a friend who was invaluable in helping load the Kitchen Island – Bar into our truck early this morning.  Without my friend’s help, we might have missed our delivery deadline.)

With a number of our items finding new homes yesterday and the delivery of the Kitchen Island, we rearranged our consignment booth.
